No Vacancy Gallery is pleased to present

FLESH
Group exhibition

10 to 15 December 2019
Opening Thursday 12 December from 6 to 8pm

The human body is the centre of how we experience the world around us. Through physical interactions, body language and an individual's appearance we try to gain an insight into one another. However, often there is a disconnect between perception and reality.

Everybody has a body, everybody has flesh. Your body is personal yet exposed to everyone. The way we look upon those bodies, our own or someone else’s, can be very different. Do you ever imagine what it would feel like to be in someone else’s skin? How is it to be in your own skin? What is flesh and what does flesh mean to you?

Our contemporary society conveys social conventions which are often challenged through the representation of the body in modern day art.

Artists include Alex Bajada, Annalise Bosnjak, Autumn Tansey, Bambi Johnson, Brighde Kennedy, Bryn DC, Caitlin Dear, Chloe Caday, Damon Kowarsky, Darren Tanny Tan, Debbie Weinmann, Deborah Bowen, Edie Black, Emma Gardner, Eric Clarke, Felicity Grabkowski, Fiona Knight, Gaia Walicka, Georgia Laurie, Grace Burnished, Harry McAlpine, Htet Wai, Hyunju Kim, India d'Scarlett, Irene Ferguson, Isabella Kottek, Jack Lee, JB Knibbs, Jinsol Hong, Jo Roszkowski, Jonathon Harris, Joseph Ferns, Josh Simpson, Katalia Pribadi, Kathy Sarpi, Keely Varmalis, Kimberley Liddle, Lana de Jager, Madeleine Sherburn, Margaret Ambridge, Marina Rolfe, Melinda Clyne, Natasha Kelly, Savina Hopkins, Simone Esterhuizen, Stephanie Crowe, Stephanie Garner, Tess Cheetham, Thomas Schmocker, Throwaway, and Vismante Cai.

PÉRÉGRINATIONS at the Alliance Française de Melbourne

The Alliance Française de Melbourne is delighted to invite you to the opening of

PÉRÉGRINATIONS
Prints and drawings by Damon Kowarsky

Official opening Wednesday 23 October from 630 to 8pm

Working from a studio in a 12th century abbey with the support of the Alfred and Trafford Klots International Program for Artists, Damon painted every day for two months: capturing with watercolour and pencil the lush countryside, the hills rising up from the river, the midsummer light, and all in ever-changing shades of green. Since returning to Australia Damon has concentrated on a suite of etchings inspired by his memories of Brittany. The subtle and intricate architecture, the open skies and luxurious green of Léhon permeates each work presented as part of this exhibition.

Exhibition continues until 22 November

Talk - 'The Science and Art of the Periodic Table'

Bio21 Institute is pleased to present "The Science and Art of the Periodic Table" as part of National Science Week.

Wednesday 14 August 2019 from 330 to 5 pm

Bio21 Institute
30 Flemington Road
Parkville VIC 3052, Australia

'Elementary, my dear Watson!' - Sherlock Holmes used reasoning and deduction to collect clues and to solve crimes. So too, Dmitri Mendeleev, a Russian chemist and inventor, observed a pattern in the properties of nature's elements and solved one of the most intriguing scientific puzzles: The Periodic Table of Chemical Elements.

In this, the 150th anniversary of Mendeleev's iconic paper and the the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements, Quantum Victoria commissioned artwork depicting the individual elements of the periodic table. In a series of hexagonal panels, artists Damon Kowarsky and Hyunju Kim, have hidden clues about the role that elements play in our every day life.

Scientists at the Bio21 Institute are equipped with powerful instruments - magnetic resonance and mass spectrometers and electron microscopes - that harness our knowledge of the elements to gather clues as we seek to solve problems and puzzles of medicine, the environment and agriculture.

In this National Science Week event, hosted by the Bio21 Institute, University of Melbourne, we will hear from an artist, Damon Kowarsky and three scientists, Professor Frances Separovic AO, Dr Nick Williamson and Dr Andrew Leis, who illuminate, through different perspectives, the value and the fascination of the periodic table of elements.
