'Laird, Kings and Queens' at Tacit Art Galleries

The Laird is proud to feature in Tacit Galleries Midsumma program ‘PINK’ with 'Laird Kings & Queens' – featuring select winners from the last 10 years of The Laird's 'Men on Men' art competition.

Artists Jimmy Twin, Andrew Li, Ross Spirou, Michael Elliot, and Damon Kowarsky cover a broad range of imagery through painting, digital illustration, photography and etching. Works explore the varied and often debated concept of masculinity from the fragile to the unapologetically bold.

With its 11 exhibition spaces, Tacit Galleries is a new and inspiring curated venue empowering artists in the heart of Collingwood's thriving art precinct.

Other artists featured in Tacit Galleries' Midsumma program PINK include: TJ Bateson, Dave Behrens, Ray Cook, Tim Craker, Ren Gregorcic, Aymen Kaake, Ben Mercer & Tom Pender, David Lee Pereira, Kim Leutwyler, Tony Longo, Nathan Milner, Tricia Page, Pansy Ass Ceramics, Julia Sant Mire, Rod Spark, Steve Sumpton and Aaron Walker.

Contained within the many structures that man has built across the earth for habitation, ritual and gathering, is an inherent power. Each tower of stone or brick, steel, concrete or plaster is an embodiment of social, political, individual or collective decisions that describe narratives of culture, power and agency. These narratives are generally considered to resonate outwards, originating from an internal place and with an individual voice. In ‘Sans Frontières’ Damon Kowarsky presents an alternative to this way of seeing and understanding structure and the relationships that structures have with place.

Through depictions of diverse urban locations including Pakistan, India, Melbourne, New York, views of rural France, renderings of contemplative figures, and views through forests, Kowarsky applies his archaeological-eye. He offers us views beyond and between structures to reveal their relational narrative - one that is global, interconnected and ever-emerging. At its heart, ‘Sans Frontières’ examines how ways of looking, orientation, and perspective can uncover narratives of culture, power and agency through the structures and spaces they create. Spaces that are constrained by the human psyche that has constructed the labyrinth.
