Overwintering at South Australian Musuem

The Overwintering Project at the South Australian Museum

24 September to 12 November 2021

The Overwintering Project is an environmental art project that invites artists to visit, research and respond to the their local migratory shorebirds and their habitats.

The fastest declining group of birds in Australia, each year 36 shorebird species migrate from Australia and New Zealand to their breeding grounds above the arctic circle in Siberia and Alaska, crossing 23 countries along the way. Since the project began, more than 200 printmakers have created works inspired by these remarkable birds to raise awareness of their existence and the need to preserve their critical overwintering habitats, including Adelaide’s own International Bird Sanctuary – Winaityinaityi Pangkara.

Come along to the South Australian Museum and enjoy an exhibition of selected prints showcasing these incredible creatures and the more than 100 internationally important overwintering sites that provide them sanctuary each year.

Overwintering in Kingsborough, Tasmania

The Overwintering Project is about the migratory shorebirds that spend the greatest part of their year on the shores of Australia and New Zealand. Migratory shorebirds are the fastest declining group of birds in Australia, and this project is designed to make them and their habitats visible, in the hope of helping save them from extinction.

Artists from Australia and New Zealand were asked to respond to the unique nature of their local migratory shorebird habitat. Australia and New Zealand have over 100 internationally important shorebird overwintering sites. These sites are not interchangeable: each possesses a unique combination of physical and biological features that make it the perfect sanctuary for migratory shorebirds to return to, year after year.

To date over 300 artists have joined the Overwintering Project. Anyone can join. To find out how, and for details of including upcoming and past exhibitions, visit  www.theoverwinteringproject.com

Exhibition continues 5 to 17 July from Tuesday to Saturday.

No Vacancy Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of printmaking.

RESIST/RELIEF takes the technical language of making, conceptualising this process to create a duality between these two forms.

The RESIST technique exposes and endures, withstanding corrosive agents to continually occupy space.

RELIEF techniques carve out a space that offers clarity and calm.

Artists responded to these themes through works that reflected acts of resistance; be they highly visible social issues crying for action, or smaller acts of everyday resistance that would otherwise go unseen.

Artists include Anna Russell, Cat Lawrance, Cecilia Jacobs, Clara Chan, Damon Kowarsky, Eleanor Franks, Elizabeth Banfield, Georgia Steele, Henry Leslie-O'Neill, Hyun Ju Kim, Jack Parnaby, Janet Hughes, Jennifer Lea, Jessie Balletta, Jennifer Tarry-Smith, Joanna Kambourian, Jessica Choi, Juan Rodriguez Sandoval, Kyriaki Teo, Maddie Crockett, Mali Taylor, Mia Sabec, Melanie Cobham, Olympia Sarris, Rubee Hay, Ruth Stanton, Sam Reiher, Zoë Tripovich, and Paul Bishop.

The Overwintering Project: Western Port

Co-ordinated by Melbourne artist Kate Gorringe-Smith

6 March to 23 May 2021

Alexis Beckett, Andrej Kocis, Beverley Meldrum, Byron Scullin Heather Hesterman, Cathryn Vasseleu, Dominic White, Hank Tyler, Helen Kocis Edwards, Jan Parker, Kate Gorringe-Smith, Khue Nguyen, Lindy Yeates, Liz Walker, Magda Miranda, Rea Dennis, Simeon Lisovski and the artists of the Overwintering Project Print Portfolio

The Overwintering Project is a long-term environmental art project that unites artists around Australia to raise awareness for our most endangered group of birds, migratory shorebirds, and their habitat. Migratory shorebirds spend the summer on our beaches, then fly annually to the arctic to breed, a round trip of over 25,000 km.

The Overwintering Project: Western Port focusses on Western Port as an internationally significant migratory shorebird habitat. The exhibition features 17 artists who have produced new work in a variety of media inspired by the local Western Port environment. These will be shown in conjunction with the Overwintering Project Print Portfolio, a growing collection of 300+ original prints made by artists from Australia and New Zealand in response to the unique nature of their local migratory shorebird habitat.

This exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, is part of the 2021 Art+Climate=Change Festival and is dedicated to the memory of Dr Clive Minton OAM, father of Australian shorebird research. The Overwintering Project: Westernport is supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria.

Solo Exhibition at POME

POME is pleased to present a solo exhibition of recent works.

‘Some of these works date from before the world ended. Others were made in that brief, apocalyptic time before COVID hit Australia in March last year. A summer when the skies above Melbourne turned grey with smoke, when the smell of burning filled suburban backyards, when red dust from storms in the Mallee came down as rain and stained the cars, the streets, the footpaths.

But even before this I'd been thinking about the delicate balance between the natural and man made worlds. How our cities are somehow full of vegetation and animal life, and how little it would take for nature to reassert itself even in the hearts of our modern metropolises.

All the images are etchings, drawn by hand on copper plates and printed using equipment that has not much changed in the 500 or so years since it was invented.’
